Sometimes life and football have a funny way of giving you another chance.
Just weeks after being denied entry into the United States and missing out on the World Cup, Somali referee Omar Artan has been handed one of the biggest assignments of his career.
The 34-year-old will take charge of Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup clash between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League champions Aston Villa.
And honestly, what a turnaround.
Artan was supposed to be part of the refereeing team at the World Cup in June, but his tournament dreams came crashing down before he even got on the pitch.
He arrived at Miami International Airport but was refused entry into the US, despite FIFA having selected him to officiate at the tournament.
The situation quickly became a major talking point. A US State Department official later told reporters that Artan was linked to suspected members of terrorist organisations and, as a result, was not eligible to enter the country.
That meant no World Cup.
No big-stage moments.
No chance to show the world what he could do with the whistle.
But football had other plans.
Now, just weeks later, Artan is heading to one of European football’s biggest stages, and this time, nobody is stopping him from walking onto the pitch.
UEFA has appointed him to referee the Super Cup meeting between PSG and Aston Villa, giving the Somali official a chance to make his mark in a fixture watched around the world.
For Artan, this is more than just another appointment.
It is a reminder that one door closing does not necessarily mean the end of the journey.
He missed the World Cup due to circumstances beyond his control. Now, instead of looking back at what could have been, the Somali referee has another massive opportunity right in front of him.
