So Manchester United lost 1–0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford…
And honestly, this game left us with more questions than answers.
LESSON ONE: Man United still don’t know how to punish teams.
City went down to 10 men in the first half.
TEN. MEN. 😭 At Old Trafford.
For more than an hour.
And United still couldn’t find the back of the net.
That is not bad luck anymore. That is a problem.
For Manchester City it just means they still have an elite mentality even without Pep Guadriola.
LESSON TWO: Haaland Only Needs ONE Chance

United could dominate possession, complain about VAR and argue about everything else…
Haaland? Nine goals in Manchester derbies now.the big man finds a way. The goal was messy and VAR took forever, but the finish was pure Haaland.
Give him one opportunity and he’s already asking, “Where’s the celebration camera?”
LESSON THREE: VAR is never far from the drama.
Haaland’s goal went through a serious VAR examination because of Enzo Fernandez’s position.
Haaland was onside, but Fernández was offside and tried to play the ball.
VAR said the goal could stand.
And later, the refereeing body admitted the decision was an error.
So basically…
United were already struggling against 10 men, then VAR added another chapter to the story. 😂
LESSON FOUR: Squad depth and smart substitutions matter
Maresca brought on Iliman Ndiaye at half-time and the energy changed. City’s new midfield of Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernández fought for every ball. United’s options off the bench felt less decisive. Money and recruitment still separate these two clubs.
LESSON FIVE: MANCHESTER UNITED NEED TO START LOOKING LIKE A TEAM

Against 11 City players, you can understand struggling, but against 10, At home?
For over 70 minutes? That’s where you expect a team to show personality, and United didn’t.
So, the biggest lesson from this Derby?
Manchester United don’t just need better results.
They need to start looking like a team that knows exactly HOW it wants to win football matches.
And there you have it, five things we learnt from the Manchester Derby.
City showed us that even with 10 men, they can still find a way.
United? Well… there’s still plenty of homework to do.
But that’s football, one game, plenty of drama, and somehow VAR still finds a way to be the main character.
