Nigeria takes on Madagascar, and while all eyes will be on the Super Eagles to get the job done, there are a few individuals who could make the difference.
With Victor Osimhen missing, the spotlight shifts to some of Nigeria’s other attacking weapons, while Madagascar also have players capable of causing problems.
1. Alex Iwobi (Nigeria, Fulham)
A creative hub in midfield/attack. Expected in the possible lineup alongside Ndidi and others, Iwobi’s vision, progressive passing, and ability to carry the ball should help Nigeria control possession and break down a compact Madagascar side. He has long been a reliable Super Eagles performer in big games.
2. Rayan Raveloson (Madagascar, Amedspor)
One of Madagascar’s most experienced and influential midfielders (often a leader/captain figure). He covers ground, competes physically, contributes in both boxes, and has spoken confidently ahead of the game. He’ll be key to disrupting Nigeria’s rhythm and organising the Barea’s midfield.
3. Ademola Lookman (Nigeria, Atlético Madrid)
Nigeria’s main creative threat and goal threat without Osimhen. The versatile forward/winger (recently of Atalanta, now at Atlético) excels at cutting inside, linking play, and finishing. Previews highlight his ability to create from wide areas and unlock organised defences, exactly the challenge Madagascar are expected to pose.
4. LOÏC LAPOUSSIN (Madagascra, Guangxi Hengchen)
Lapoussin is the wildcard.
He’s the kind of player who can become particularly dangerous when Madagascar don’t have much of the ball because he gives them an attacking outlet when they win possession.
His numbers for Guangxi Hengchen in China are impressive: nine goals and seven assists in the 2026 league campaign.
5. George Ilenikhena (Nigeria, Al-Ittihad)
This is probably the most interesting addition. Ilenikhena has started the new season strongly for Al-Ittihad, with 6 goals and 2 assists in 9 matches across all competitions.
He has been given his first senior Nigeria call-up at exactly the right time, with Osimhen and Onuachu dealing with injuries. His pace, direct running and ability to attack space make him a potentially dangerous option against Madagascar.
6. Calvin Bassey (Nigeria, Fulham)
Bassey remains a reliable, physical centre-back for Fulham in the Premier League, contributing solid defensive performances and the occasional goal threat from set pieces. His consistency and aerial strength would help Nigeria stay solid against any Madagascar counters.
7. Marco Ilaimaharitra (Madagascar, Standard Liège)
The defensive midfielder remains a reliable starter and experienced presence in Belgium. He brings composure, ball-winning ability, and leadership useful for shielding the defence and helping Madagascar stay compact against Nigeria’s attackers.
