Nigeria’s Flamingos Stun Defending Champions DPR Korea With 3–1 World Cup Victory

Nigeria’s Flamingos have announced themselves as serious contenders at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, defeating two-time defending champions DPR Korea 3–1 to secure a place in the Round of 16.

After opening their campaign with a 2–1 defeat to Poland, the Nigerian side recovered with a 2–0 win over Puerto Rico before producing their most impressive performance yet against one of the tournament’s dominant teams.

DPR Korea had scored 12 goals in its first two matches, establishing itself as a formidable attacking force. But Nigeria responded with a disciplined, clinical display that exposed the champions’ vulnerabilities and delivered one of the tournament’s standout results.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, finishing after breaking past her marker. Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 38th minute, sending the Flamingos into half-time with a commanding advantage.

Nigeria continued to threaten after the restart, and Kanyinsola Yusuf extended the lead to 3–0 in the 56th minute with a superb free-kick. DPR Korea pulled one back through Yu Jong-hyang’s penalty in the 82nd minute, but the Flamingos held on to secure a memorable victory.

Beyond the scoreline, the result carries significant historical weight. Here are three reasons why.

1. They defeated the defending champions

DPR Korea arrived in Morocco as the reigning champions, having won the previous two editions of the tournament. Their record made them one of the teams to beat, and their attacking output in the group stage reinforced their reputation.

Nigeria did more than contain them. The Flamingos scored three goals, controlled key moments of the match and demonstrated the attacking quality needed to challenge the competition’s strongest sides.

2. They ended a 2,900-day unbeaten run

According to FIFA, DPR Korea had gone approximately 2,900 days without a defeat in regulation time at the U-17 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria brought that run to an end with their 3–1 victory.

The result was a significant achievement for a Nigerian side that had entered the match needing a result to guarantee progression. It also demonstrated that DPR Korea’s dominance, impressive as it has been, is not unassailable.

3. They recovered from a difficult start

Nigeria’s campaign did not begin as planned. A 2–1 defeat to Poland put pressure on the Flamingos to respond, and their subsequent 2–0 victory over Puerto Rico gave them a platform to build on.

The win over DPR Korea completed that recovery. Nigeria finished the group stage with six points and advanced to the knockout rounds, showing an ability to respond to adversity and raise their level against stronger opposition.

What comes next for the Flamingos?

Nigeria’s victory is a statement of intent, but the tournament is far from over. The Flamingos finished second in Group B behind DPR Korea, with Poland also ending the group stage on six points. All three teams progressed to the knockout rounds.

For head coach Akeem Busari and his players, the challenge now is to sustain the intensity, discipline and attacking efficiency that defined their performance against the defending champions. The knockout stage leaves little room for error, and the pressure will only increase as the competition progresses.

Nigeria’s previous best finish at the tournament was third place in 2022. With a place in the Round of 16 secured, the team has an opportunity to build on that achievement and pursue another deep run.

One victory does not win a World Cup. But defeating a two-time defending champion, ending a remarkable unbeaten run and recovering from an opening-match loss are reasons for genuine optimism.

The Flamingos have earned their moment. Now comes the harder task: proving that this performance is the beginning of something bigger.
