At 20, most people are still figuring out adulthood. Kimi Antonelli has figured out how to conquer the world of Formula 1! Imagine being 20 years old and having the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc looking up at you on the Formula 1 podium. Sounds unbelievable, right? Well, welcome to the world of Kimi Antonelli!

The Italian has officially become the youngest Formula 1 World Champion in history, rewriting a record that had stood for 16 years. And he did it in just his second season in the sport! The Mercedes driver sealed the championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1, finishing third in a race won by four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
Interestingly, Antonelli did not even need to win the race. He only needed to finish ninth or better to guarantee the championship, regardless of what his closest rivals achieved. He started fourth, kept his composure through a race that featured a red flag and a late safety car, and crossed the finish line in third place. That was enough to make history.

But this achievement did not happen overnight.
Antonelli arrived in Formula 1 in 2025 as an 18-year-old, taking over the seat vacated by Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. That alone came with enormous expectations. Rather than spending years finding his feet, he quickly demonstrated why Mercedes had invested so much faith in him.
His 2026 campaign has been particularly impressive, with victories in China, Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco forming part of a remarkable winning run. His consistency and ability to deliver under pressure helped him build an advantage that his competitors simply could not recover from.
And there is another layer to this achievement.

Before Antonelli, Sebastian Vettel held the record, having won his first championship with Red Bull in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso also joined the championship club at 23.
Antonelli has beaten them all by more than three years.

He is also Italy’s first Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari won his second consecutive title in 1953, ending a 73-year wait for the country.
So, what have we learnt from Kimi Antonelli?

Age is not always a measure of readiness. Opportunity matters, but so does the ability to take advantage of it. And sometimes, the next superstar does not need to wait for the legends to retire before announcing himself.
At 20, Kimi Antonelli has not just announced his arrival. He has taken the crown.
