From Nigerian athletes adding more medals to the country’s Commonwealth Games tally, to the Super Falcons grinding out their first victory at the WAFCON, football clubs getting valuable minutes in pre-season friendlies, and an unlikely celebrity boxing showdown stealing headlines, there was something for everyone.
Team Nigeria keeps the medals coming
Nigeria finished the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland in seventh place overall with 24 medals 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.
Gold Medals: 10 (including historic wins like Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400m, alongside Esther Nworgu, Goodness Nwachukwu, Idris Riluwan, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi)
Silver Medals: 7 (Udodi Onwuzurike Men’s 200 meters)
Bronze Medals: 7 (including Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles).
Super Falcons edge Zambia
It wasn’t the most convincing performance, but champions know how to win even when they are not at their best.
The Super Falcons secured a narrow victory over Zambia in a tightly contested WAFCON encounter.. Zambia asked plenty of questions throughout the game, but Nigeria’s experience and discipline proved enough to get the job done even with a woman down.
The result keeps the Falcons’ title defence firmly on track, although there will still be areas for the coaching staff to improve before the tougher tests ahead.
Charles Okocha vs Portable: The fight everyone is talking about

The match quickly went off the rails during the first round when both fighters threw standard boxing etiquette out the window. Instead of trading traditional punches, Portable executed a series of illegal, MMA-style takedowns, grappling Okocha to the canvas and securing side control.
The referee and security personnel were forced to step into the ring to separate the two men. Once the chaotic opening round ended, Portable walked straight out of the ring and up the arena ramp amidst heavy boos from the crowd.
The overall fight purse reportedly stood at ₦150 million, with Portable claiming he received an upfront payment of ₦50 million.
Pre-season football heats up with mixed fortunes

With the new European season just weeks away, clubs continued fine-tuning their squads over the weekend, and there were plenty of talking points.
Chelsea’s preparations suffered another setback after slipping to a narrow defeat in Australia. Arsenal, meanwhile, continued to build confidence with another convincing victory over Girona.
Manchester United also enjoyed a positive outing, cruising to an emphatic win as they continued to adapt to life under Michael Carrick. Real Madrid’s pre-season continued with a hard-fought draw against Fiorentina.
WAFCON GOALS CONTINUE TO POUR IN
One of the biggest talking points at this year’s WAFCON has been the goals. Just the group stage alone has produced 50 goals after just 16 games, underlining the attacking football on display across the tournament.
At the end of the group stage of the 2024 WAFCON, there were 46 goals scored, making it the highest-scoring group stage in recent WAFCON history.
