Ayra Starr, the Grammy-nominated Nigerian singer-songwriter, has spent much of 2026 turning New York City into the backdrop of her career’s biggest chapter — the release of her third studio album, Starrgirl. What started as a relocation has become a full-blown citywide moment, capped by an unusually theatrical album rollout, high-profile appearances, and a Fashion Week moment that made headlines this month.
Ayra Starr’s relocation to New York wasn’t framed as a casual lifestyle change — outlets covering the move described it as a deliberate strategic decision that read as intent rather than a casual relocation. She has said the city’s resemblance to Lagos and its large African diaspora were key reasons for the move, while maintaining that representing Afrobeats and Nigerian culture globally remains central to her identity. Industry commentary has noted that her New York move has coincided with a more polished fashion sensibility and a sound leaning further into R&B textures aimed at Western pop audiences.
Much of Starrgirl itself was shaped in New York — the 16-track album was disclosed to have been mostly completed in New York City and Lagos.
