Everything That Made Sports Interesting This Weekend

From Manchester United dropping points against Tottenham to Manchester City embarrassing Liverpool at Anfield, and Ayra Starr giving us goosebumps with Heaven Baby on an NFL stage, this weekend had everything. Football drama, big statements, heartbreak and a Nigerian superstar making history.

1. Manchester United couldn’t beat Tottenham, Pastor Jerry Eze, we need another revival!

United looked to have done enough to win after Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead in the 73rd minute. But Tottenham, despite being reduced to ten men following Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card, refused to surrender. Dominic Solanke scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to make it 1–1.

Imagine having the numerical advantage, taking the lead and still allowing your opponent to leave with a point. That’s the kind of result that leaves a stadium full of people wondering what exactly they just watched.

And of course, Nigerians will remember Jerry Eze’s much-discussed programme at Old Trafford. After this latest disappointment, perhaps the pastor needs to return for another revival. The first one may have inspired some hope, but the footballing demons clearly haven’t finished their work!

2. Manchester City silenced Anfield  and Liverpool had no answers

City won 3–0 at Anfield, with Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki getting on the scoresheet. Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the second half, making an already difficult afternoon even harder for the hosts.

But the story wasn’t just about the result. The match came amid the controversy surrounding City’s financial-rule verdict, which the club has appealed. That made the victory even more significant: City had to deal with the noise off and on the pitch and still deliver on it.

For Liverpool, it was a painful reality check. For City, it was a statement that they intend to compete regardless of the pressure surrounding the club.

3. Arsenal survived Leeds, while Chelsea absolutely ran riot!

Arsenal showed the resilience needed to win tight matches. Chelsea, meanwhile, reminded everyone that when their attack clicks, they can make a game look easy. The red and blue from Londo were really eating good this weekend.

The title race is still developing, but weekends like this matter. Dropping points can cost you dearly, while putting five past an opponent sends a message to the rest of the league.

4. Europe had its own weekend of madness

Forget waiting for the game to settle. Robin Fellhauer of Augsburg needed just 8.37 seconds to score against Bayern Munich, setting a new record for the fastest goal in Bundesliga history! The crazy part? Bayern had kicked off, played the ball back to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and the goalkeeper attempted to lift the ball over Fellhauer. Unfortunately for Neuer, Fellhauer read the situation perfectly, intercepted the ball and rolled it into an empty net.

Just like that, history was made!

5. Ayra Starr made NFL history, and ‘Heaven Baby’ gave us goosebumps

This was probably the highlight of my weekend. Ayra Starr took centre stage at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London during the NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, October 11. She became the first African artist to headline an NFL International Games halftime show

And the moment she started singing Heaven Baby? Goosebumps!

There was something special about watching a Nigerian star bring that sound to such a massive international sporting audience. She also performed Rush and Hot Body, giving fans a taste of the music that has helped make her one of Afrobeats’ biggest global names.
